Kingfisher avocados are grown in our small orchard which occupies about 0.5ha of the property.
We grow the Hass variety which are picked while green in colour and the fruit then ripens off the tree.
There are several stages in the ripening process and the colours are a guide to when best to eat Hass Avocados:
·
Tree Green - unripe/hard
·
Olive green - 2 days to eating
·
Wood brown - Firm eating ripe
·
Mahogany brown - Soft eating ripe
To store for a short time Avocados can be kept at 4-6degC
There are just over 30 trees on the property and most are 9/10 years old.
Kingfisher Cabin is surrounded by the avocado trees and has views into the orchard and our leafy gully full of walnut trees.
Orchard News
Many of our overseas visitors have been amazed to find avocados growing and some have either never seen an avocado tree or more surprisingly had not realised they grew on trees! So we have been doing a bit of education.
The trees are loaded so it looks like a good crop this year. We will be picking around the end of November and already we have flower buds for next year’s crop, so its a matter of looking after those!
We enjoyed hosing several Rugby World Cup 2011 fans who were lucky to have tickets for the opening ceremony and first match and the Bronze final.
Hey WE WON!
If you plan to stay at Kingfisher Cabin we would be pleased to show you around the orchard or you can take a stroll through the trees at your leisure!
We welcome those wishing to have a rural weekend get-away from City life!
In the summer its a super spot to laze in the sun and re-charge or in winter its great curl up warm in the rooms with a good book!
